The Traveler.

What is the purpose of life? What is it that we seek? Is it happiness, peace, a sense of contentment? According to many spiritual texts, the ultimate purpose of humans is to realise that we and the cosmos are one. From that, which we came, to that we shall return — Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

God, the universe, call the ultimate intelligence what you will, is characterised by three fundamental qualities, omnipresence, omnipotence, omniscience, that is, being eternal, all powerful and all knowing. Hence, as the children of God, this is what we all ultimately desire.

The Traveler

Now, there are many ways for the prodigal son to return home. However, the terrain is wrought with enticing distractions and temptations, ready to trap the senses of the unwary, the cultivation of wisdom should be the first priority for all seekers of truth.

“All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost.”

J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring.

To travel the spiritual road alone is not at all easy, but it is necessary to be prepared for it, as fellow seekers are not in great abundance. So, while the large crowds burn up their life force with endless sense gratification, resolve to burn your karma and free the anchor of your mortality, and, in so doing, be done with all the pain and suffering, which unrealised human existence is necessarily burdened with.

As the tobacco burns in your pipe, releasing its sacred smoke to rise up into the ether, you, yourself, do the same with your life. Travel towards the horizon, where the ocean meets the sky, and become one with that, which lies beyond; and should you be fortunate enough to meet fellow travelers along the way, share your blessing with a communal song and pipe smoke, to fill all of your sails with joy for the long journey ahead.

Please enjoy my haiku The Traveler, and have a great trip, in whatever form it takes.

“Fair winds in his sails,

the traveler smokes his pipe.

The horizon calls.”

Welcome home.

G’day there! I’m an Australian-Finn, now in the second half century of life. I’m an intrepid nomad and professional coach possessed with a keen curiosity to explore the world around me, and to keep discovering and learning new things. I created this community to support and share experiences with fellow free spirits and world explorers.

Ok, so what can you enjoy as a member of the Life on the Run community? Well, here’s a starting list, but it’s dynamic and hence will morph over time as the community evolves.

  • discussions, advice and guidance on endurance sports training practices
  • life coaching discussions and support on the analysis and resolution of personal issues
  • regularly published Haikus (and other poetry and essays) with discussions about their deeper significance and application in everyday life situations
  • access to my collection of active lifestyle videos (e.g. bicycle touring, camino walking treks, explorative running, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, life lessons and self-development, even pipe smoking!)
  • open discussions about pretty much ANY matter, as long as all engagements are respectful by all concerned.

Now, to answer the obvious question coming out of the above, ‘What makes you qualified and relevant to express your views about those matters?” Well, please allow me to briefly tell you a little more about myself.

I’ve spent pretty much my entire lifetime as a professional in the field of health, sports, fitness and coaching. I was originally trained as a physiotherapist in Australia (way back in 1988). Then, over the years, I’ve morphed into a professional level endurance sports, as well as life coach, having travelled and worked in at least a dozen different countries around the world, including as a tertiary level academic, and as an educator of future health and fitness professionals.

I want you to also know that I practise what I preach in my personal life. Simply put, I walk my talk. I’ve been a long distance runner (marathons and ultramarathons) all my life, including completing the 2012 edition of the famous Marathon des Sables footrace, a 254km journey over 7 days in the Moroccan Sahara, as well as a couple of Ironman triathlons. While I still run regularly, my main focus now is on training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which I began in 2018. That decision, and the journey since, is a whole big story in itself!

Anyway, there’s way more to unpack about my journey to get to this point in my life, but hopefully the above gave you some idea. I look forward to not only sharing my content with you, but also to hearing about what’s going on in your life. Together, let’s make OUR community an oasis of exploration, discovery, open and respectful sharing, and, ultimately, a locus for real learning with real life applications.

Welcome to your Life on the Run!
